Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I create a DropSpot?
Because it’s free, it’s fun and it’ll brighten up your journey to work—and you’ll find all sorts of wierd and wonderful things from the people who live all around you.
Do you have any tips for creating a good drop spot?

Creating a Drop Spot is a wonderful opportunity to exlore your surroundings in a refreshing and eye opening way. Here are some things to keep in mind as you stroll:

  1. Keep an eye out for nooks and crannies along the side of buildings
  2. Check out things like newspaper boxes, planters, phone booths, permanent trash cans, there could be a spot inside, under or near them.
  3. Get back to nature! You can stash things in bushes, shrubs, parks—get those fingers green!
  4. Choose spots where a gift would be somewhat hidden from passers by.
  5. Remember the weather—if your gift ain’t weatherproof be sure to seal your gift in a plastic baggie or Tupperware
  6. Try to find a spot at least 5 inches in size (the smaller the dropspot, the less things people can leave in there)
  7. Secret. Secret. Try to stash your gift when no one is looking.
I can’t think of a gift idea. Any ideas?

We like small things that you’ve made yourself: a drawing, a handwritten note, a photo you found somewhere, a mix cd. Or it can be something that you’ve had lying around your apartment for ages, collecting dust: a toy, a book, a strangely shaped vegetable.

Leave things of little or no financial value. Leave things that you’d like people to add to, or modify in some way. Check out the gallery to see what people have been sharing.

How can I let people know that I found something?
Go to find a spot, locate the Drop Spot on the map and select its marker. Click on “comments” and post your thoughts.
How can I find out what happened to my gift?
Don’t be shy of writing a note to go with what you leave. If you want people to modify or add on to what you left, then tell them so! You can ask people to post a photo to the gallery, or you can ask them to email you direct, if you prefer. But always be very careful about your personal privacy.
What if I go to a Drop Spot and nothing is there?
There is nothing worse than an empty Drop Spot, but they are inevitable. Even though you won’t receive a gift, you can keep the spot alive by placing a gift there. This act of good karma will surely reward you the next time around. Make sure to report the status of the Drop Spot and your kind actions in the comments section for the spot itself. If the spot is continually empty despite your best efforts for exchange, post this in the comments and we will retire the spot.
